Peter Baker on the Indictments: Trump Surrounded Himself with People Who Want to ‘Help Him Carry Out His Goals’
RUSH EXCERPT:
BAKER: "Not that I’ve heard. No, I think he’s surrounded himself in this second term with people who share his point of view, who want to enable and embolden and help him carry out his goals rather than the other way around. The first term, he had people around him conventional Republicans, professional civil servants, four star generals and the like who tried to to, to, to, you know, temper his instincts for revenge. Who said to him, yeah, okay. We understand, but this isn’t something we can do. You know, he had two attorney generals and Jeff Sessions and Bill Barr, both very conservative men, very experienced conservatives, who said, look, we can’t prosecute people just because you want us to. We have to actually follow facts and and follow the law. Now, he doesn’t have people around him who try to suggest that maybe this isn’t the wisest course or the the most, you know, legally sustainable course. He has created an offense for the people he wants to go after. And Charles knows this better than I do. I’m not a lawyer, but they can all say, hey, look at this. The president, United States is ordering people to prosecute me, even though the career people said there’s no case there. And I can’t imagine that if he really wants to prosecute these people, if he really thinks they’ve done something wrong, he hasn’t helped that case."
