Harris: ‘It Is Aspirational, But Very Real, Seeing in the Face of a Stranger, a Neighbor ... That Was Really Beautiful’

‘All were under the same roof’

EXCERPT:

HARRIS: “I was so conscious and aware of the short time that we had. I mean, it sometimes would drive my incredible team bananas, because wherever I showed up, in whatever town or city I was, the first thing I would do with the local leaders, be they elected community leaders, I’d ask them, what more can we do? And that’s one of the things that — it was very intense. But let me also say, was incredibly beautiful was we would have these events where people who I’m sure had never been under the same roof with the people who were standing next to them, all were under the same roof, seeing themselves and each other. As I like to say — and it is aspirational, I think, but very real — seeing, in the face of the strange,r a neighbor. And I saw that throughout our country. You know, I mean just, you name the — whatever you’re thinking, the race, the age, the gender, whatever you’re thinking about who our country is. And all of them being together, seeing each other as fellow Americans and invested in a common goal. And that was really beautiful and very affirming."
