NY Magazine’s Herrman: Conservatives Claim AI Chatbots Are Biased Because They Don’t Like the Answers

‘Chatbots have been trained on basically the whole internet’

EXCERPT:

HERRMAN: "Well, What Mark Zuckerberg is doing here, or what Meta is doing, is making the case that there’s bias in AI, that all these new chatbots have been trained on basically the whole internet. They’ve scraped all these articles, all this academic literature, all these comments and everything. And what comes out of that is an AI model that has absorbed all this stuff, including biases that they say are left-leaning. So you’ve got people asking chat bots about controversial social issues, about election-related stuff, and they’re getting answers that at least some of them are unhappy with. And conservatives love drawing attention to this. You ask it about Covid you, you ask it about vaccines, you ask it about, you know, the outcome of the 2020 election, and you’re going to get consensus, sort of supported general stuff like, yeah, Joe Biden won that election or, you know, like, yeah, vaccines tend to help with these things. And this has become a hot-button issue in the way that for many decades media bias has been, you know, a real area of concern, but also politically useful, the way that social media bias, as Mark Zuckerberg is talking about, has become this really powerful tool, you know, as an accusation for people like Donald Trump to say 'Facebook is biased, Twitter is censoring us,' things like that. Next up, it’s AI. The next big thing is the next big argument about bias."
