Biography
Susie Banikarim is an Emmy award-winning journalist, director, producer and media executive. A rare veteran of both television and digital media, Susie is a frequent speaker & panelist on media, content strategy, digital media startup culture and diversity & inclusion.
She is the co-host and Executive Producer of In Retrospect with Susie Banikarim and Jessica Bennett from iHeart Podcasts and The Meteor. Previously, she was the Head of Global Newsgathering and an Executive Vice President at Vice News.
Prior to Vice, she was the Editorial Director of Gizmodo Media Group where she oversaw Deadspin, Gizmodo, Jalopnik, Jezebel, Kotaku, Lifehacker, Splinter and The Root. In 2017, she was the first filmmaker-in-residence at Harvard University’s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy where she directed and produced the documentary “Enemies of the People: Trump and the Political Press” about media coverage of the 2016 presidential election. The film was nominated for two Emmy Awards in 2020.
Before that, Susie was the Chief Content Officer of Vocativ, a media and technology startup. She was a 2014 Nieman Fellow and lecturer at Harvard University. She also helped launch Katie Couric’s syndicated talk show, served on Tina Brown’s management team at Newsweek Daily Beast as deputy director of editorial and executive producer of Daily Beast TV. She began her journalism career at ABC News where she eventually served as a producer for Diane Sawyer, George Stephanopoulos, Charlie Gibson and David Muir.
Susie has received the Edward R. Murrow Award for feature reporting, two Emmy Awards and 11 Emmy Award nominations. She is a graduate of Barnard College and has a master’s degree from Columbia University’s School of Journalism.
